Google Inc.’s New Android Lollipop Reduces Fragmentation

Android 5.0 lollipop developed by Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is its latest version of mobile operating system, which runs on Google’s play edition devices including Nexus. At the Google’s I/O developer’s conference, It was first unveiled by the name of Android L. It has a redesigned user interface built around a responsive design language referred to as material design. It also allows notification to be accessed from lock screen and displayed with other apps at top of the screen. A do not disturb menu was also added to the notification screen. Internal changes were also made while replacing dalvik with Android runtime.

This Android has an increased use of grid based layouts, depth effects, padding, responsive animation and transitions. Some other features are the newly designed apps menu; it uses a three dimensional stack of cards to open apps and opening of multiple cards for example all the opened tabs of the web browser can be seen individually. It also contains new API’s added for use by applications.

Dalvik was officially replaced by ART, which is a cross platform runtime that supports x86, MIPS and ARM structures in both 32 and 64 bits. Dalvik uses just-in-time compilation while ART compiles apps after installation and the compiled versions are then run exclusively. This technique removes the processing overhead improving system’s overall performance. This also leads to reduced fragmentation. Fragmentation is a phenomenon in which storage capacity is used inefficiently that reduces capacity or performance of your device; sometimes it reduces both performance and capacity.
