Outspoken NFL star Richard Sherman accepting bitcoin

There aren’t too many professional athletes that are accepting bitcoin as a method of payment. One international celebrity is, though, and that could lead to other sporting stars to follow suit and do the same.

Richard Sherman, Seattle Seahawks cornerback and YouTube sensation, operates an online store that sells merchandise containing his likeness as well as the phrase “Don’t you ever talk about me.” This phrase he coined in his 15-second television rant has become quite famous.

Richard ShermanAccording to RichardSherman25.com, customers can purchase a shirt with the phrase for $29.99 and can be bought with a credit card, PayPal or bitcoin. The website began accepting bitcoin payments in December and the Seattle Times cites Sherman’s agent, Jamie Fritz, saying he garners anywhere from 20 to 30 orders each month with the virtual currency.

“The decision was based on supporting the fan-base choices to transact via the latest medium — not unlike PayPal or traditional credit cards,” Fritz told the Seattle news organization.

Sherman made the bitcoin addition official in a Facebook post calling it “the currency of the future:”

A wide range of celebrities, athletes and organizations have hopped on the bitcoin bandwagon. William Shatner has begun to dabble with bitcoin and has received the virtual currency through #TipperCoin. Former Spices Girls star Mel B became the first musical artist to accept bitcoin. The Sacramento Kings, meanwhile, garnered mainstream headlines after becoming the very first professional sports team to accept bitcoin.
