One-stop Guide to the Emmys 2014: Winners and Losers

Last night underneath the glittering lights the television industry held its biggest night of the year, but were there some surprises for the dead certs? Who came away victorious and who left brokenhearted from TV’s answer to the Oscars.

WINNERS

Best Supporting Actress in a Drama– went, predictably to the talented Anna Gunn for her work in ‘Breaking Bad’.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama– was snagged by Margulies who, in accepting the award for her role in ‘The Good Wife’ gave a speech about the current golden age for women on TV. Nice to know someone’s happy with the status quo!

Outstanding Writing in a Dramatic Miniseries or Movie– fell into the expectant hands of Steven Moffat for ‘Sherlock’, but then with Benedict Cumberbatch in tow it would have been a miracle if this show had not rocked the house.

Best Actress in a Miniseries– proved perhaps the most surprising result of the night. The decision was made to pass over Hollywood A-lister, Julia Roberts, in favor of a TV actress: Kathy Bates with ‘Horror Story: Coven’.

Best actor– found a home with Jim Parsons who seemed a little surprised at receiving it and humbly admitted that his contenders were equally worthy ”There’s no accounting for taste, and it’s through a lot of good fortune that I’m standing up here tonight.” It was the fourth time receiving the award for ‘The Big Bang Theory’ actor and so, presumably, even he is rather sick of it.

Outstanding Leading Actress in a Comedy Series– belonged to the lovely Julia Louis-Dreyfus who fully deserved the honor for her work on ‘Veep’ and who added a sense of fun to the occasion by locking lips with Bryan Cranston.

SNUBS

Jodie Foster walked away empty handed despite being tipped as a frontrunner for her hugely successful ‘Orange is the New Black’ episode ‘Lesbian Request denied’. Instead, she and her co-stars were pipped to the post by ‘Modern Family’. This leaves ‘Modern Family’ and that old favorite ‘Frasier’ as the shows most rewarded by the Emmys throughout its run!

Matthew McConaughey was in with the hope of a win for ‘True Detective’ and put on a brave face when Bryan Cranston took the award instead. Great to see ‘Breaking Bad’ being rewarded for its addictive popularity, however.

Critics were betting high for ‘The Normal Heart’- an HBO film with all the hallmarks of an Emmy fave and a star-studded cast- and everyone was surprised to see it garner only one award for Outstanding Television Movie. It lost in three categories, at one point to ‘Fargo’. You win some, you lose some.
