Google is back with Android TV after it failed with Chromecast Dongle

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) is once again attempting to enter the TV streaming market after the failing sales of its Chromecast Dongle with a new streaming device based on Android technology inventively named Android TV. The Android based system is being touted as an entertainment interface rather than the disastrous version of smartphone streaming that the Dongle is attempting to provide.

By announcing another streaming entertainment device, Google is planning to enter what is rapidly becoming a crowded market sector with Amazon announcing its Fire TV just before the weekend and the Roku already in place.

Android TVWhat Google is hoping will set its new box apart from the competition is the devices planned recommendation engine. This will provide suggestions for users on what TV show or film they may like to watch based on their viewing history and taste. This is designed to reduce the amount of time that users need to spend browsing through lists of programs and films and create a simpler process for them to find something suitable to watch. It will also offer the option to continue viewing a film or TV show from the point it was left off for further user convenience.

The new platform will allow the use of voice commands to search for programming in addition to the remote control, and the system is going to operate with a simple interface of scrolling cards reminiscent of a horizontal Rolodex. There has not yet been a release date announced, but it is expected to be available fairly soon and very competitively priced in order to set itself apart from all the other competing boxes is this rapidly growing section of the entertainment market.
