This past week I was checking out at Target and the cashier gave me an extra 100.00 dollars in the form of a 100.00 dollar bill. I didn’t realize this happened until the next day when I looked in my wallet and was trying to figure out where the 100.00 dollar bill came from.
I came to the conclusion that the cashier at Target somehow gave me the 100.00 dollar bill thinking it was a 1.00 dollar bill. I immediately knew that I was going to return the money but it made me wonder how many people would actually go out of their way to do the same thing? I guess this is a question of integrity and morals. I can see other factors coming into play such as the economy being bad and someone could really need the extra money.
When I got to Target I talked with a manager at the customer service desk and explained what I thought happened. He asked if I would step into a back office with him while he reviewed security tapes to see if my assumption was right. Sure enough right there on the video the cashier hands me a 100.00 dollar bill. He explained that the 100.00 bills are supposed to be kept under the cashiers tray to avoid these types of mistakes.
The manager thanked me for my honestly and I gladly handed over the money. In return he actually gave me a 25.00 dollar gift card for coming back and returning the money.
Personally I felt good knowing I did the right thing but that is just me. My question to you is what would you do, would you return the money?
