5 Must-see Moments of the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards

August 24 2014 will go down in history as the most glitzy VMA awards yet, following in the footsteps of last year’s event which topped the charts for media attention- who could forget Miley Cyrus twerking next to Robin Thicke?

1. Beyonce

This year’s Video Music Awards belonged to Beyonce, as everyone agrees. The diva herself closed the show with a heartrending 20-minute performance, accompanied by her close family and with tears in her eyes. In the crowd, rumors abounded that she is soon to be a bride. She also won ‘best collaboration’ with her partner, Jay Z, and accepted the Rolls Royce of awards, the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award, for her contribution to music.

2. Miley Cyrus

The video of the year award went to Miley Cyrus…more or less. She chose to have her award accepted on stage by a local homeless man who announced that his name of Jesse and used the moment to highlight the suffering of homeless youths in the US. In an emotional plea, he went on to say “Though I may have been invisible to you in the streets, I have a lot of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight.”

3. Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj brought a bit of scandal to the night with her down-and-dirty grinding to ‘Anaconda’ and contributing a Janet Jackson-style wardrobe malfunction when she was singing with fellow stars Ariana Grande and Jesse J. She made a swift recovery from her half-zipped dress situation and went on to strut her stuff in a monochrome mod set.

4. Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift rocked the house with her new single and then proved willing to laugh at her own antics. Set up for a full-blown leap into her male dancers’ arms from the height of the stage, she refused, saying that even for the VMA she wasn’t about to do that-“it’s all kinds of people getting bitten by snakes. Dangerous.”

5. Katy Perry

Finally, Katy Perry and her partner in crime, Riff Raff, did a ‘Britney and Justin circa the millennium’ by showing up in matching denim ensembles which went down a storm. She later tweeted that the outfit had come about partly out of her love of nostalgia and partly from her ‘tumblr addiction’. Her outfit was a perfect replica of Britney’s down to the miniature denim purse she carried!
